About our Blacksmithing Courses

How I started

Following an open day demonstration at Sparsholt Agricultural College, near Winchester, I was approached by the college to run their blacksmithing evening classes, which I did successfully for 7 years. Following a change in the educational programme at the college, I set up my own courses run at my previous forge in Hampshire, providing a similar learning experience for all abilities and ages, learning the craft of the blacksmith. In addition to my business and courses, I also lectured students studying on for a qualification in Blacksmithing at Hereford College of Technology. Incorporating traditional and contemporary methods, the students learnt the blacksmithing skills and techniques to create pieces of work in line with the syllabus, but also to be able to make a living from. Following my move to Modbury in Devon, I have continued to run educational courses for individuals, groups and corporate colleagues, teaching the skills and techniques of the blacksmith, both traditional and contemporary.

Over the past 10 years I have been fortunate enough to be invited to teach at open days and week long courses across America demonstrating techniques both taught to me and developed by myself.

What to Expect On the day

Here is an opportunity to experience a full day working as a traditional blacksmith does, using the age-old skills of fire, hammer and hand; to shape and form hot steel on the anvil, working in the surroundings of a professional forge and studio, situated in the wonderful countryside of the South Hams area, in rural Devon, between Plymouth and Kingsbridge.

All skill levels will be catered for, from artisan to artist, men and women, young people and seniors.

This is an open door opportunity to experience the seemingly impossible, but to achieve so much.

The one day fee for this educating experience is £85.00, with a deposit of £20.00 required with the enclosed form.

Two day fee is £150.00, with a deposit of £40.00.

The fee includes the provision of safety glasses, protective gloves and all materials.

Included in the course fee is lunch at the California Cross Inn, providing a great opportunity to discuss the morning’s learning and the afternoon’s plans.

Fully equipped

All materials are included in the price as well as use of the tools and machinery in the forge, everything from traditional hammer and chisels to gas forges and power hammers.

One last thing…

All Safety equipment will be provided but you will need to wear sturdy shoes, long trousers and long sleeve top.
Please be prepared that you will be working next to a live fire, therefore the environment will be very hot at times.
