As a professional Blacksmith, Designer and Sculptor, designing and making ironwork at Red Anvil Forge & Studio located in Modbury, Devon, England, the craft of the blacksmith forms the bedrock of my working practice. Inspiration is drawn from nature and the material (mild steel) is heated by fire and worked red-hot, by hammer and hand in the traditional way.
I invite commissions for new projects, which may range from traditional scrollwork and crafted items, through contemporary designs with more modern themes. The practicality of the traditional blacksmith’s craft in these times, also relates outdoors to functional sculpture, perhaps as seating, gates, garden structures or water features; while interior pieces may take the form of furniture, wall sculpture, stairways and lighting, to give an idea of a few of the possibilities for involving this craft in your life.
Through modern working processes, I create high quality, hot-forged articles made mainly in mild steel and occasionally stainless steel.
Whether the style is traditional scrollwork, or contemporary sculpture, my ideals do not waiver from the craft principles and techniques of the blacksmith, wherein the metal is forged hot from the fire, by hammer and hand.
The strength and integrity of my designs, together with the high standards I achieve, have gained be the award of a Silver Medal, awarded by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths (WCB). I have been National Champion Blacksmith three times, I am a fellow of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths (FWCB) and a Freeman of the City of London.
A display of hot forged ironwork can be viewed in the showroom of The Red Anvil Forge & Studio at Pennymoor. Crafted items such as candle holders, fire irons and mirrors, are exhibited along-side items of a more sculptural nature. All these items are available for purchase. Commisioned work can also be discussed first-hand, for bespoke ironwork such as: gates weathervanes, furniture, stairways and garden orientated forge-work like arches, pergola and water features.
